Cabinet Minister Disagrees With Schools Reopening Plans

Pupils-Leaving-Classrooms After Schools were closed

Raphael Magyezi, the Local Government Minister has disagreed with the cabinet decision to reopen schools on Monday saying it’s still risky when the country is witnessing a surge in the number of patients testing positive for Coronavirus.

The number of COVID-19 confirmed cases in the country now stands at 317 after 36 new cases were recorded from tests conducted on Thursday.

Speaking on Thursday at Churchill Courts Hotel in Gulu, Magezi noted that it’s better for the children to remain uneducated at the moment but when they are safe.

Last week, President Yoweri Museveni said that education institutions will open on June 4 to only finalists in Primary seven, Senior four, Senior six and those in their final years in Universities and Tertiary Institutions.

However, the Ministry of Education and Sports is yet to issue comprehensive guidelines on reopening schools to candidate classes as the country prepares to begin a phased lifting of the national lockdown against COVID-19.
