Gulu Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary attendants are on the spot allegedly for charging exorbitant amount of money to release bodies of Covid-19 victims.
The attendants are being accused of charging between 500,000 shillings -800,000 shillings per body.
The matter came to limelight today after the family of a retired police officer who succumbed to Covid-19 were asked to pay 600,000 shillings to release the body. According to Denis Odongpiny, the Gulu Resident City Commissioner, the family notified his office and he subsequently informed the hospital administrators.
James Otim Onegiu, the Senior Principal Administrator confirmed receiving the report, adding this is not the first case of mortuary attendants asking for money to release dead bodies after several of such reports have been reported in the past. According to Otim, he has received reports that mortuary attendants have been charging between 100,000 shilling and 800,000 shillings to release dead bodies.
