A 22-year-old man was this morning arrested for allegedly raping a 68-year-old woman in Lagwiny village in Bungatira Sub County, Gulu district.
Charles Olweny reportedly raped the elderly woman at around 8:00am along a community access road as she was going to collect firewood.
Some community members who caught him beat him up before handing him over to the police at Bungatira police post.
A police officer attached to Bungatira police post says Olweny was transferred to Gulu central police station while the old woman was taken to hospital for treatment.
He said that a charge of rape was preferred against Olweny.
According to the penal code act, any person convicted of rape is liable to suffer death.
