A 19-year-old woman in Gulu has been sentenced to 5-years in jail for double arson.
Prisca Acayo, a resident of Layibi Center, Bardege-Layibi Division in Gulu City was found guilty of burning down her former husband’s house and that of her mother in-law.
Prosecution told court that Acayo willfully and unlawfully set fire on fire the houses of her former husband Odongkara Peter and Ajok Gloria, her mother-in-law on March 1, 2021, from Cubu Acoyo Cell, Pece-Laroo Division in Gulu City.
Mother and son however escaped unhurt but lost all their property.
According to prosecution, Acayo, who had separated with Odongkara in 2019, set his house on fire after seeing him with another woman in a local bar and also set her mother-in-law’s house on fire.
Acayo however told court presided over by Chief Magistrate, Francis Dawa Matenga said that she had tried three different relationships and they had all failed because she was failing to conceive.
Acayo blamed her former Husband’s family for her misfortune because after she delivered a still born baby, Odongkara’s family buried the child with some charm which is the reason all her relationships were failing.
Matenga, sentenced her to 5-years imprisonment in each count which she will serve concurrently and also ordered her to compensate Odongkara and his mother two million shillings each upon completing her sentence.
