A local businessman at Unyama Trading center in Unyama sub county, Gulu district on Wednesday shocked the residents after he unexpectedly approached the area local council 1 chairperson, pleading to be caned saying he tried unsuccessfully to commit suicide because life has become hard for him.
Sam Onen, a resident of Unyama A village in Unyama Sub County told the authority that he tried on two different occasions to commit suicide by hanging but the rope keeps on breaking.
Otto Hellen Lajech, the area local council one (LCI) chairperson told Mega FM that they had to hand over Onen to police for further management.
A report from Gulu Regional Referral Hospital indicates that 29 people were rushed to the facility after attempting to commit suicide this festive season.
According to the penal code, a person who attempts suicide commits a misdemeanor and be punishable with imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years.
On Monday Aswa River Region Police says it’s distressed by the rampant cases of suicide, a number of which have been linked to frustration.
More than 10 cases of suicide have been recorded between December 2019 and early January 2020, according to records by the area Police.
In 2014, Uganda ranked number 17 among countries with high suicide cases, according to the World Health Organization.
