Gulu- A young couple has been arrested by police in Gulu for allegedly aborting a five months pregnancy in Industrial Area Cell, Bardege-Layibi Division in Gulu city.
Patience Kiraga aged 18 and her lover Nicholas Opiyo aged 20, are all residents of Industrial Area Cell.
Reports say that Kiraga bought an abortion inducing drug from a clinic on Sunday and aborted the fetus after Opiyo said he was not ready to have the child.
She wrapped the fetus in a cloth and dumped in a garbage pit where a dog was later seen eating it.
This prompted a search by local authorities leading to the arrest of the couple.
Washington Okello, the Defence Secretary Industrial Area Cell said the suspects are being detained at Gulu Central Police Station while the fetus was taken to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary.
Efforts to reach David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson for a comment were futile as he didn’t answer our calls.
Abortion is illegal in Uganda unless performed by a licensed medical doctor in a situation where the woman’s life is deemed to be at risk.
