Horal Investment Company Ltd, the company behind Atiak sugar project, is counting yet another loss after wildfire on Saturday and Sunday burnt down an estimated 200 hectors of its sugar plantation in Atiak Sub County, Amuru district.
The fire also ravaged 14 grass thatched huts belonging to members of the UPDF attached to 71 battalion, deployed to guard the plantation.
The fire believed to have been set by unknown people was first reported to the local authorities on Friday 10th. It escalated until Sunday evening when the Police Fire and Rescue Service team rushed to help put it out.
David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Region Police spokesperson confirmed the incident.
This is the 10th time that the sugar project has suffered fire outbreaks, razing down several hectors of the sugar plantation since the project was launched in 2016.
The 2020 police annual crime report indicates that the factory incurred a loss worth 3billion Shillings due to the fire outbreaks in 2019.
