The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has said the oppositions took advantage of the LRA led conflict and turned Acholi sub region into their stronghold.
According to NRM, the over two decades’ long war an indictment on the party in power.
Richard Todwong, the Secretary General NRM said after communities were forced to live in internally displaced persons camps spread across northern Uganda, the party suffered heavy defeats in election, while oppositions were gaining more grounds. According to Todwong, NRM suffered heaviest defeat in 2006 general elections.
He said until 2011, NRM had performed dismally in every elections.
He noted that during the 2006 presidential election, NRM party candidate, Yoweri Museveni performed poorly if compared to his closest rivals, Dr. Kizza Besigye.
For example, according to Todwong, Museveni got only 18.8 percent of the votes in Kitgum District, while Besigye won by a landslide after garnering 75.4 percent.
Todwong adds that after communities in Acholi sub region resettled back to their original villages, the performance of the NRM party candidates’ improved significantly.
