More female adolescents are infected with HIV/AIDS than their male counterparts, according to the Uganda AIDS Commission report of 2022.
According to the report, 1.7% adolescent girls, aged 15 to 19 years, are infected as compared to 0.2% of adolescent’s boys in the same aged bracket.
Rwengabo Victor, the Uganda Aids Commission Zonal Coordinator Northern Region attributed this to lack of information to girls towards HIV prevention measures which makes them vulnerable and also having multiple partners. Rwengabo adds that peer pressure also contributes to the high infections among teenage girls with most starting having sex as early as 15 years.
At least .4 million people are living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda and out of that 5.5% are adults, aged 15-49 years.
