A number of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed by police along most of the streets in Gulu city have malfunctioned, a year after its installation.

From March to August 2020, the Uganda Police installed over 100 CCTV cameras in Gulu city and its surrounding townships to combat crime.

However reports have emerged that a number of them have malfunctioned. When contacted David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River region police spokesperson, confirmed the report saying plans are underway to repair them.

In March, 2017. President Yoweri Museveni directed the immediate installation of cameras in all major towns of Uganda and along the highways to combat crime.

The directive came hours after a shooting which claimed the life of police spokesman Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his driver and bodyguard.

However in March, 2022, reports emerged that nearly four in every 10 state-run security cameras installed to catch criminals are dysfunctional.

In total, 1776 out of the 5,153 cameras installed countrywide under the CCTV surveillance camera network project superintended by police have malfunctioned.
