A 22-year-old woman, a resident of Kal B Cell in Pabbo Town Council, Amuru District died while allegedly attempting to abort.
Concy Aryemo reportedly died last Tuesday from St Mary’s Hospital Lacor where she was admitted in critical condition.
According to police, the victim drunk a concoction of herbs in an attempt to abort and started to complain of serious pain. She was first rushed to Pabbo Health Centre III before being referred to Lacor Hospital where she later passed on.
One suspect identified Proscovia Ayerwot has been arrested to help police in their investigation into the incident.
David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Region Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) confirmed the report and said Ayerwot is suspected to have administered the herbs to the victim that resulted into Aryemo’s death. He said the suspect is facing murder charges under SD reference Number 14/11/08/2022.
Abortion in Uganda is illegal unless performed by a licensed medical doctor in a situation where the woman’s life is deemed to be at risk. The Ugandan Ministry of Health in the Annual Health Sector Performance Report of 2017-2018 estimates that as of 2018, 5.3% of all maternal deaths result from abortion complications.
