Amuru district recorded the highest number of teenage pregnancies in Acholi sub region in the last three years, according to a new report.
The Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA) report released last week in Gulu City indicates that between 2020 and 2022, 8,926 underage girls between the ages of 12-17 years were defiled and impregnated in Amuru District.
The research attributed the alarming rate of defilement in Acholi sub region to the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted into the closure of schools across the country.
Omoro district recorded the second highest cases of teenage pregnancies at 7,100 cases followed by Agago at 6,778.
Nwoya came fourth with 6,776 cases, Pader (6,426), Kitgum (5,536) Gulu (4,831), and Gulu City (4,638) in that order.
Lamwo district reported the least number at 3,909.
In total, 54,929 underage girls in Acholi became mothers at a very tender age in the last three years.
Ms Justine Katwesigye, the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Specialist at USIAD Sites called on leaders in Acholi sub region to do more in tackling teenage pregnancies.
