WhatsApp Fuelling Gender Based Violence In Acholi


Police in Aswa River Region has warned that WhatsApp, a text, and voice messaging app, has become a powerful tool in fuelling domestic violence in Acholi sub region.

Since the lockdown was announced in late March, police has recorded over 500 cases of domestic violence in Acholi sub region.

Some of the domestic violence cases have resulted into murders involving sexual partners.

In August 2017, Police in Gulu District arrested a 38-year-old man identified as Abdul Rubangakene for allegedly killing his wife for answering a late- night telephone call.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa River region police spokesman said their preliminary investigations report indicate that mobile devices and internet have turned into weapons and are fuelling domestic violence in the region.

He noted that such social media discussions sometimes result into mistrust and physical violence.
