A suspected thief has died at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital after being beaten by a mob over alleged theft of a phone.
Rubangakene Tony, a 19-Year-Old resident of Kanyagoga C in Bardege-Layibi division in Gulu city was assaulted on October 1, 2021 for allegedly stealing a phone worth 300,000 shillings.
David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River region police spokesperson says the deceased who was transferred to Gulu Central Police station from Bardege police post on Monday collapsed at 8:00pm and was rushed to Gulu Regional referral hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly.
Mudong says that the body was taken to the mortuary for a postmortem and that one suspect he did not identify is in police custody.
According to police, Rubangakene was detained at Bardege police post over theft of the phone but escaped.
He was later intercepted by the community who assaulted him before handing him over to police in Bardege.
Rubangakene was scheduled to appear in court this morning.
