At least seven employees attached to Gulu District Health Department have been fired over alleged chronic absenteeism.
According to the health sector performance report for the 2021/2022 financial year, the seven affected civil servants include four porters, two askaris, a nursing assistant and a senior environmental health officer.
The seven lost their jobs after they failed to give valid explanations to why have they absconded work. Their names have since been deleted from the payroll due to chronic absenteeism.
In the last two years, Gulu District Health Department has been grappling staff absenteeism.
Absenteeism among healthcare staff in Gulu is put at 10 percent, according to the 2021/2022 financial.
Meanwhile, the prevalence of health workforce absenteeism in Uganda is estimated to range between 37 percent and 48 percent.
