Prime Minister, Robinah Nabanja on Thursday launched an operation to evict Balaalo cattle herdsmen from Acholi Sub region.
During the launch at Palaro Sub County in Gulu district, Nabanja promised to have Balaalo out of Acholi Sub region within the next six weeks.
The prime minister was accompanied by a select team who include Gen. David Muhoozi- the Minister for Internal Affairs, Col. Charles Okello- the State Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Bright Rwamirama- the State Minister for Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny, the state minister for Northern Uganda.
Nabanja noted that the Balaalo’s presence in the sub region has become a security threat, caused food insecurity through destruction of food crops and families breakage as the herdsmen grab people’s wives.
She also said President Yoweri Museveni is disappointed in leaders from Acholi Sub region for failing to address the issue of Balaalo cattle herdsmen, the Prime Minister, Robinah Nabanja has said.
Nabanja cited Resident District Commissioners-RDCs, District Internal Security Officer-DISO’s, District Veterinary Officers and L.C V Chairpersons.
The President according to Nabanja, said this matter shouldn’t have taken this long and accused a number of leaders in Acholi sub region of connivance in bringing the Balaalo into the region.
Simon Peter Wokorach, the Aswa County Member of parliament said the influx of Balaalo has led to an increase in land conflicts between community and the herdsmen.
