Police To Install ANPR To Fight Vehicle Theft
Police in Aswa River Region has revealed that besides the Closed- Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras, plans are also underway to install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system along the major highways in the region to fight rampant car and motorbike thefts in Acholi sub region.
Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is particularly powerful, classifying vehicle type and recording number plates worldwide.
Police and security authorities worldwide are using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) for various purposes such as border and toll controls, and to increase civil security.
Acholi sub region is grappling with thefts of motorbikes and vehicles.
In the last three years, at least 500 motorbikes and 10 vehicles have been stolen from the sub region.
Police plans to install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system along Gulu –Kampala Highway, Gulu –Juba Highway ,Gulu –Kitgum road ,Layibi round about, Custom Corner roundabout and Unyama trading centre in Gulu District among others .
Jimmy Patrick Okema the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson said they plan to use advanced technology in fighting rampant vehicle and car thefts in Acholi sub region.
