Police Detain Their Own For Threatening Violence
A police officer attached to Bardege police post in Gulu Municipality is being held on allegations of threatening violence.
Police constable Patrick Komakech is said to have gone to Akwa village in Lamogi Sub County, Amuru district on Sunday armed with an SMG rifle to investigate reports that his nephew was having a love affair with his unidentified wife.
Komakech reportedly fired a bullet in the air while interrogating his wife and nephew over the allegations.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa River region police spokesperson said that Komakech was disarmed and arrested by police from Lamogi Police post and that his gun with 29 rounds of live ammunitions is in police custody at Lamogi police post.
The incident comes just less than a month after a Uganda peoples defense force (UPDF) officer Corporal Geoffrey Okello shot and killed three members of a family in Pece division, Gulu municipality.
In December 2019, Uganda police force advisory committee noted the need to carry out a mandatory mental checkup for all police officers in the country and so far the exercise has been concluded in the Kampala metropolitan police area.
According to Christine Olanya, the acting assistant commissioner of police welfare, the check would help to know what drives some actions of the police and also curb suicide among the officers.
In December, 2019 at least six officers committed suicide using their own weapons.
