There was drama at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital on Wednesday evening after police blocked the transfer of Aruu County Member of Parliament, Samuel Odonga Otto to Mulago Specialized National Referral Hospital.
Otto was hospitalized on Tuesday where he was rushed from Pader District where he collapsed during interrogations in relation to his escape from police custody on January 6th for flouting COVID-19 guidelines and campaigning past 6 pm.
A medical worker at the hospital who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Otto was referred to Kampala for further care but that a police officer who was guarding him declined to release him, saying he was following ‘orders from above.’
According to the Leader of Opposition – Betty Aol Ocan who was closely involved in the case, the legislator had already been granted bond at Pader Central Police Station prior to his admission at the hospital.
It took her intervention and that of the Kilak South MP, Gilbert Olanya who contacted the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen Paul Lokech for help.
According to Olanya, Otto was instructed to report to the Police Headquarters in Kampala on Tuesday next week for further questioning.
The former FDC stalwart is among 12 MPs from Acholi sub-region who lost their seats during the January 14th, 2021 elections after serving his constituency for 20 years since 2001.
