Police Bans New Year Fireworks, Overnight prayers over COVID Fears, Terrorism Threats

Police have said fireworks displays and overnight prayers will not go ahead across the country including Acholi sub region to welcome the New Year’s Day due to surge in COVID-19 infections and threats posed by terrorists.

Every year, major hotels and social places in Acholi sub region host firework displays to welcome the New Year.

Dozens of proprietors of hotels and individuals have already applied to police to be granted permission for fireworks displays.

But in a statement released on Monday, police said fireworks displays in the region has been cancelled due to the continuing high rates of COVID-19 and terrorism.

David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Region Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) says that fireworks displays can turn into a super spreader event since it usually attracts a huge crowd.

Police has since apologized to members of the public who wants to welcome the New Year’s as they watch spectacular fireworks displays.

It has been a tradition for many to welcome the New Year as they watch fireworks displays.

But as Ugandans celebrate the final moments of 2021, the country is still facing strict Covid-19 restrictions.
