Over 800 Dogs, Cats Vaccinated Against Rabies On World Rabies Day

A total of 891 dogs and cats were on Wednesday vaccinated against rabies disease in Pabbo Sub County and Pabbo Town council during the World Rabies Day celebrations organized by Big Fix Uganda.

World Rabies Day is an international awareness campaign coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, a non-profit organization with headquarters in the United States.

Out of the 891 animals vaccinated, 869 were dogs and 22 were cats.

45 of the animals were spayed and neutered to control the dog and cat population.

Francis Okello Oloya, the Manager Comfort Dog Project under the Big Fix Uganda said they had targeted to vaccinated 1,000 animals.

He however, said they also managed to rescue and clean up a number of dirty dogs and also distributed leashes to dog owners who has been using chains to restrain their dogs.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), rabies occurs in more than 150 countries and territories.

More than 55,000 people die of rabies every year mostly in Asia and Africa.
