One Killed, Several Injured In Apaa Attack

One person was this afternoon shot dead and several others injured in the disputed area of Apaa Township-between Amuru and Adjumani district by armed men dressed in Uganda Wild Life Authority-UWA Uniforms.

Denis Opiyo Abiro, a resident of Lacor in Bardege-Layibi division, Gulu city was carrying 10 vendors in vehicle UAU 932G heading towards Pabbo from Apaa Market when they were attacked at around 3:00pm.

Charles Okot, the L.C 11 Chairperson Labala parish in Pabbo Sub county, Amuru district said the deceased was stopped by a group of men majorly in UWA uniform but continued driving prompting the armed men to shoot at his tyres and later the driver when he attempted to escape through the window.

Okot said three vendors collapsed and were taken to a clinic at Apaa trading centre where the driver died from.

Michael Lakony, the Amuru District chairperson condemned UWA for the attack saying it was deliberate and discriminative since the community from Adjumani are allowed to freely trade in Apaa.

Lakony urged local leaders in Amuru to demand for justice for the death of the driver.

Bashir Hangi, the UWA Spokesman denied UWA’s involvement in the shooting saying it is hard to know who exactly shot the driver as the roadblock along Pabbo-Adjumani is manned by police, army and UWA.

Bashir later said the deceased wanted to knock officers on duty when he was asked to stop.
