NRM Picks Anita Among for Speaker Race

Anita Among Elected Deputy Speaker

The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) chaired by President Yoweri Museveni has picked Deputy Speaker Anita Among to be the party’s flag bearer in the race to replace Jacob Oulanyah as speaker.

CEC in a statement said, ” CEC having noted that the NRM party has established a culture and practice of elevating the Deputy Speaker to the position of Speaker, even when there has not been any disruption and now even more when there is an emergency, hereby recommends to the NRM parliamentary Caucus that Rt Hon Among Anita Annet for endorsement as NRM candidate for the position of Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda.”

The position of Speaker fell vacant after the death of Omoro County MP Jacob Oulanyah.  He died on Sunday from a hospital in Seattle, USA where he had been taken for specialized treatment last month.

At the time of his death, Oulanyah had only presided over parliament business for 9 months and 24 days since his election to the position on 24th May 2021.

On Monday, cabinet set March 25 as the date for the election of a new speaker of Parliament.

Meanwhile, the tentative burial plan for the fallen Speaker  Oulanyah will be released after the election of his successor, according to Ms Milly Babalanda Babirye, the Minister for Presidency.

Ms Babalanda has been appointed by the President as the National Chairperson for the sendoff of the former Speaker of Parliament.

Government has also appointed Eng. Hillary Onek, the Disaster Preparedness Minister to coordinate with political and cultural leaders the burial of Oulanyah.

Olanyah who should have been celebrating his 57th birthday will be laid to rest at their ancestral home in Ajuri village, Lalogi Sub County in Omoro district.

He was elected three times as the area Member of Parliament for Omoro County in Omoro district. He also served as Deputy Speaker for two terms before taking over from Rebecca Kadaga after winning the May 2021 Speakership election.

Rececca Kadaga is the new 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs.
