A man who cut down three Borassus palm trees locally known as Tugu in Kulu keno village, Owoo Sub County in Gulu district was last week fined 150,000 shillings and also ordered to cleanse the land.
Richard Opiyo in his late 20s cut down the tree last Wednesday, an act which locals say caused a hailstorm that destroyed crops in the area.
Cosmas Oyat, the area local council1 Kulu Keno village told Mega FM that it’s against tradition to cut the Tugu tree during the rainy season.
Opiyo agreed to pay the 150,000shillings fine and to perform a cleansing ceremony.
He is expected to provide a got for the ceremony and also apologize to people whose gardens were destroyed by the hailstorm.
