LDUs In Karamoja Joining Cattle Rustling
The UPDF has raised concerns over the rising number of Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel in Karamoja sub region who are deserting the forces and joining armed cattle rustlers’ groups in the region.
According to the army, LDUs are involved in violent cattle thefts and aggravated robbery cases after abandoning the army.
Despite the fresh disarmament exercise being carried out by the army, security in Karamoja remains fragile.
Since January to date, the army has recovered 72 guns suspected to have been bought from black market in South Sudan and Western Kenya.
Major Peter Mugisa, the 3rd Division Army Spokesperson said at least two LDU personnel have been court martialled for their involvement in aggravated robbery.
Major Mugisa explained some of the suspect after going on Absent Without Leave (AWOL), they used the guns to rob cattle.
