Gulu Ebola Outbreak Remains The Worse in Uganda-Health Ministry

Dr. Mathew Lukwiya

The 2000 Ebola outbreak in Gulu District remains the worse ever registered in Uganda in the last 22 years, according to the Ministry of Health.

The outbreak was first registered in October 2000 and lasted for close to two months.

The disease infected 424 people and killed another 224.
Among those killed by the highly infectious disease was Dr. Mathew Lukwiya, the former Medical Superintendent St Mary’s Hospital in Gulu City.

The Gulu outbreak is also believed the third largest outbreak recorded in Africa after West Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Uganda registered seven Ebola outbreaks in the last 22 years. In total, 721 people were infected while 333 died.

Nearly 95 percent of the infections and deaths were linked to the Ebola Sudan strain.

Meanwhile, just 3 percent of the outbreak was linked to Ebola Zaire.
