Brigadier Steven Kavuma, the 5th division army commander based at Acholpii in Pader district has urged government to retire from service elderly Local defense Unit-LDUs.
Brigadier Kavuma made the appeal last week to Major General David Mohoozi who last week presided over the third passing out ceremony of 448 LDUS who had been undergoing a military training in Labwordwong Papa battalion in Paimol Sub County.
He said that there many LDUs who are over 70 years still in service that should be retired.
The training wing commander captain Martine Oriot said the LDUs were trained in military maneuvers, political education and to be law abiding.
Those trained range from primary seven leavers to diploma holders and from Abim, Kotido Pader Kitgum and Agago districts.
Meanwhile, Brigadier Kavuma has accused a section of local leaders in the region of inciting the public to lay claims over land where government installations including army barracks are situated.
The Brigadier said such claims are wrecking military-civil relations yet civilians and the army need each other for the good of our nation.
Government lands being claimed by the locals are where the 5th division headquarters is at Acol-Pii, Pajimo army barracks and Labwordwong training wing.
