Five Children Test Positive to Measles in Lamwo

Five children from Agoro Sub County in Lamwo district have tested positive to measles.

Charles Labalpiny, the in-charge of Agoro Health Center III on Wednesday said that the children were admitted in the isolation unit at the facility last week with symptoms and signs of measles.

He says their blood samples were taken on Friday last week to Uganda Virus Research Institute [UVRI] which turned positive.

Labalpiny says another 18 suspected cases of children with similar signs and symptoms of measles have also been reported at the facility and are being monitored.

Labalpiny advised the community members to report any symptom similar to measles to nearby health facilities.

He also encouraged parents whose children haven’t been immunized to ensure they receive the measles-rubella jab for their safety.

Emmanuel Ainebyona, the Health Ministry Spokesperson says those suspected to have tested positive might be among children who didn’t receive the measles-rubella immunization.

The outbreak comes just two months after the government conducted a mass immunization campaign for children below 15 years against polio, measles and congenital rubella infection.
