Fire Ravages Atiak Sugar Plantation For Fifth Time
For the fifth time in five years, fire has ravaged several hectares of sugarcane plantation at Atiak Sugar Estate in Gem village, Amuru district.
The last night fire incident has reduced to ashes five blocks of sugarcane plantation estimated in millions of shillings.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa River Region police spokesperson said they suspect an arsonist was behind the fire incident.
Efforts to reach out to Amina Hersi Morge, the Managing Director of the multi-billion factory were futile since she didn’t pick her call.
This comes less than three weeks after fire ravaged 95 acres of sugarcane at the plantation.
In February, 2019, an estimated 600 acres of sugarcane were also destroyed by bush fire at the plantation.
In November, 2018, more than 250 acres of sugar burnt down and in 2016, fire gutted 150 acres of sugarcane plantation at the factory.
The factory faces land wrangles with some landowners in Gem village, Pachilo Parish in Atiak Sub County in Amuru district.
The project is being undertaken by Horyal Investment Holdings Company Ltd (HIHC) owned by Businesswoman Amina Hersi and a host of other investors.
Uganda Development Corporation (UDC), the holding company for government enterprises, has a 40 per cent stake in the company.
