At least 1,300 residents of Bura Village, Paicho Sub County in Gulu District spent Wednesday night in the cold after their houses were flooded following a heavy downpour.
The three hour downpour which started at 6:00 pm and stopped at 10:00pm destroyed over 200 houses, latrines and crops like beans, maize, simsim and soya beans.
Phillip Ongwech, the L.C11 Chairperson Pagik Parish said locals were forced to seek refuge at neighbouring Menya sub village-about a Kilometre away.
Ongwech is now urging the district disaster management committee to intervene and help the affected community.
Simon Peter Oola, the vice chairman Gulu said a team would be sent to the ground to assess the damage adding that they will seek assistance from development partners as the district does not have funds for disaster.
Meanwhile, over ten vehicles are stuck on Lungulu-Amuru road leaving several people stranded.
Lungulu road which connects Nwoya district to Amuru district is currently in a very sorry state forcing pedestrians and bicycle owners to divert into people’s gardens, according to Atube Denis -the L.C111 Chairperson Lungulu Sub County.
Okumu Peter Anywar, the Nwoya district road engineer however said they do not have funds for emergency road repairs adding that the constant rains have made even routine road works impossible.
