The Health Ministry has confirmed that the cumulative death toll from Ebola virus hit 21 as of Sunday evening.

In a tweet, the ministry said 4 out of the deaths were confirmed to be as a result of Ebola, while 17 others were established to have been probably caused by the virus.

The health ministry says there have been 34 suspected cases and it believes 21 deaths were probably caused by the Ebola virus. Health teams are continuing to trace people that may have come into contact with it.

The outbreak began in the central district of Mubende but has now spread to two neighbouring districts of Kyegegwa and Kassanda.

This is the fourth Ebola outbreak Uganda has faced. Past outbreaks have occurred in Uganda in 2000, 2007, 2011, 2012.

The largest documented outbreak occurred in 2000–2001 in Gulu District, registering 425 cases and 224 deaths.

The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission.

The case of the relatively rare Sudan strain was confirmed by the Virus Research Institute. Uganda last reported an outbreak of the strain in 2012.
