Civil Society Organisations (CSO) on Monday launched the first ever centre to handle election violence cases in Acholi sub region ahead of Thursday’s elections.
The centre is located at Churchill Courts Hotel in Laroo-Pece division Gulu city. It’s being manned by The Women situation’s room Uganda in partnership with the Electoral Commission, Uganda Police Force (UPF) Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) and other security emergencies.
The Gulu centre will handle cases of violence in the seven districts gazetted as hotspots for violence during elections that include Amuru, Nwoya, Gulu, Kitgum, Lamwo, Arua and Koboko.
Rev. Canon Diana Kwesiga, a member of the eminent Women at Women’s Situation Room Uganda says the centre was opened because they are anticipating violence in a number of districts in the country.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson hailed CSOs for the initiative in ensuring that people are protected during elections.
