Atiak Traders Count Losses As Illegal Charcoal Dealers Are Ejected

Several traders at Atiak trading center in Amuru district are counting losses following the ejection of over 250 illegal charcoal dealers from Apany in Okidi parish yesterday.

The charcoal dealers who hail from different regions including Buganda and Busoga and have been cutting trees for logs and charcoal for five years were forcefully transported to Karuma yesterday.

Odiya Wilfred Baguma, the L.C 111 chairperson Atiak Sub County said that the charcoal dealers were loaded onto a trailer registration number UAX 381 J up to Karuma where they were expected to make their way back to their respective homes.

Odiya said police and army are now heavily deployed in Apany village.

But the business community in Atiak is now counting losses because many of the charcoal dealers owed them money in goods supplied.

Richard Ajwayo, a retailer says he has been supplying the charcoal dealers on credit and they would pay him later.

Ajwayo however declined to say how much money he was owed by the charcoal dealers.
