Army turns to research to resolve killings by its officers

The army is undertaking a research to establish why its officers are turning their guns on the population which they are mandated to protect.
In the last three years, there have been several shooting incidents across the country where soldiers have killed or wounded dozens of civilians.
Now, Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, the Uganda’s Chief of Defence forces revealed on Friday that the army is currently conducting a research in a bid to find out what is behind all these regrettable incidences.
On the sideline of passing out newly trained pilot, Gen Katumba Wamala says the research will guide the next course of action in order for the problem to be addressed.
According to Katumba Wamala, 80 percent of the army officers who are involved in the shootings have never served in war torn Somalia.
In 2013, a soldier who had returned from military operations in Somalia, hacked his two-year-old daughter to death.
