At least 30 Local Council leaders and the members of the village Health Teams-VHTs in Lamwo District were on Wednesday afternoon named and shamed for failing to construct Pit Latrines and hand washing facilities in their homes.

The leaders who include Local Council One chairpersons and their Secretaries, Community Development Officers and Local Council Three Chairpersons were named and shamed during the launching of the Lamwo District sanitation week which is being celebrated under theme ” Accelerating Change, sanitation and Hygiene for all as a key to disease prevention.

Speaking during the launch at Padwart trading Centre, Palabek Nyimur sub county, Wilson Arop, the Lamwo District Health Inspector said it is a big shame that leaders who are supposed to be exemplary are the ones frustrating the move to end open defecation in the district.

Pit latrine coverage in Lamwo District stands at 66 percent.

A World Bank Water Sanitation programme report released in 2012 indicates that poor sanitation costs the country at least Shs389 billion annually.

The money lost in three years can meet the cost of building the pit- latrines the country needs, which stands at Shs1.3 trillion.

Depending on depth and usage, each latrine takes not less than five years to fill, according to experts from Water Aid say.
