In yet another tragedy, fire last on Tuesday night razed down seven blocks of sugarcane plantation at Atiak sugar plantation in Atiak sub county, Amuru district.
Atiak sugar project is jointly being undertaken by Horyal sugar investment Holdings limited and the Government of Uganda.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa River Region Police spokesperson says crime intelligence officers visited the scene to establish the cause of the fire.
This is the sixth time the sugar plantation is being gutted by fire in the past five years. Early last month about 5 blocks were burnt down.
Last month, Aswa river region authority says they have established the causes of fire incidences that have left the company with a big lose.
It include delays in paying casual laborers, charcoal burning within the plantation, delays in paying compensation to the locals for their land, inadequate fire lines and wildfire among others.
Police has since advised the company to profile all the workers for easy tracking, build watch towers, recruit a public relations officer and relocate staff away from the plantation.
The factory is being built in Gem Village in Pachilo Parish in Atiak Sub County in Amuru district.
It is the first major investment in the region after establishment of Amuru Sugar works stalled for more than 10 years over a land ownership dispute in Lakang.
