15,300 Killed in Road Crashes in Uganda in Four Years

At least 15,391 people were killed in road crashes across Uganda in the last four years, according to a new report.

The deaths were recorded between 2018 and 2021.

The report on the magnitude of road traffic injuries on Ugandan roads was presented before parliament by Dr. Charles Ayume, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Health on Wednesday.

2021 was a grim year for Uganda with 4,159 individuals losing their lives on roads.

Meanwhile, in 2019, 3,880 people were killed followed by 2018 (3,689) and 2020 (3,663) in that order.

Out of the 15,391 people killed in road crashes, majority were pedestrians with 5,551 recorded deaths.

Others are 4,478motorcyclists, 1,739 passengers, 659 pedal cyclists and 778 drivers.

In total, Uganda recorded 42,550 road crashes in the last four years.

The road crashes were attributed to reckless driving, speeding and overloading.
