13 Percent Of Latrines In Gulu Lack Hand Washing Facilities
Despite boasting of high pit latrine coverage at 81%, only 13.8 % of pit latrines in Gulu district including Gulu municipality have hand washing facilities.
Laroo division performed worst in Gulu municipality in hand washing at 6.3% while Bar-dege division tried at least at 22.9 percent.
In Gulu district, Palaro sub county performed better at 22.7 percent in hand washing while Patiko performed poorly at 6.2 percent.
Fred Opiyo, the Assistant district water officer in charge of sanitation lack of hand washing equipment poses a greater health risk to the community.
On pit latrine coverage in Gulu Municipality, Pece division performed poorly at 79.2 percent while Laroo division performed best at 88.8 percent.
In Gulu district, Unyama performed worst at 68.9 percent in pit latrine coverage while Palaro sub county performed best at 92.6 percent.
Of the 78.6 pit latrine coverage in the rural areas, only 36 percent can be cleaned using water and other disinfectants.
Currently the national latrine coverage stands at 79 percent which puts Gulu at two percent above the national figure as the country gear to commemorate the International Sanitation Week starting 16th -21st March 2020.
