Police in West Nile region is investigating the death of 12 people in Arua City and Madi-Okollo district after consuming locally-distilled gin.
18 other people including the owner of the shop that sold the alcohol in Madi Okollo district, are receiving treatment at Arua Regional Referral Hospital after drinking the alcohol.
The deceased from Arua City include Awuzu Nelson 50, Alioni Isaac 47, Edemara Dick 43, Tito Gordon 51, Titus Awudele 51 and Karibu Cosmas 53. In Madi Okolo, the deceased are Ofuti Charles, Angutoko Gilbert, Lemiya Valentino and three others identified only as Anguzu, Wolo and Toko.
The victims were reportedly rushed to hospital on Saturday after drinking the pineapple Flavored Gin known as City 5.
Angucia Josephine, the West Nile Region Police Spokesperson confirmed the report adding that police rushed to scene and cordoned off the area in Luluwiri Kasua cell, Arua City where the alcohol was being manufactured from. She said that samples of the alcohol were picked and taken to the Central Laboratory to carry out tests. Angucia also said four suspects were arrested in connection to the incident.
