1,000 Ugandans evacuated by UPDF in troubled South Sudan]


Ugandans who were trapped in South Sudan’s capital Juba, which has seen days of fighting today shed tears of joy after finally seeing UPDF trucks arrive to evacuate them.
Brigadier Kayanja Muhanga, the 4th Division army Commander who is also the operation Commander for the evacuation mission in South Sudan said 1,000 Ugandans mostly traders operating in Gumbo market, a few kilometers to Juba were evacuated today.
Brigadier Kayanja said some Ugandans with motorcycles and vehicles were also given the green light to drive in the convoy for protection purposes.
Xavier Oloya, one of those evacuated said he had been trapped in his house for four days but was able to come out after hearing that the evacuation team had come.
Oloya said he is grateful for the efforts made by government to ensure that they are evacuated.
Elijah Nyaderi, a Kenyan national who is a driver with Spedag Company lauded
Museveni for the quick decision to evacuate Ugandans saying even non Ugandans like him were able to be rescued.
The UPDF rescue mission follows an order by President Yoweri Museveni last Friday last week following fighting between soldiers loyal to President Salva Kiir and his vice, Dr Riek Machar.
